Finally – arguably the real Venice of the North!  St Petersburg was the primary reason for us coming on this particular cruise itinerary, and we had two full days here.

St Petersburg has been described as a magical fairytale city, but at the same time it is also a city that is more than a little shabby and down at the heel round the edges.  Like the childrens nursery rhyme, when it is good it is very, very good but when it is bad it is horrid!

The good things include the incredible city architecture and palaces.  The bad include the traffic, crowds, bureaucracy and street crime.

The following sections describe some of the various places that we visited.  There is also a section describing Denrus, the local firm that we used for guidance.

Peterhof

The Hermitage

Pushkin

Cathedrals

The Yusupov Palace
