St Petersburg Cathedrals

We made stops throughout our 2 days at the Church on Spilled Blood, St Isaac’s Cathedral, and Ss Peter and Paul’s fortress.  Each of these sites is differently decorated, depending upon their history.  All are worth seeing.

The fortress is the burial place for all of the Russian Tsars except for Peter II and Ivan VI.

The Church on Spilled Blood was built on the very spot where Tsar Alexander II was murdered on 1st March 1881.  The interior is incredibly ornate, with much of the decoration being comprised of mosaics.

St Isaac’s cathedral is officially a museum, although services are still held there on special occasions.
