Miscellaneous Pictures and a Trip on the Metro

This page contains a variety of miscellaneous pictures that were taken over the course of the two days that didn't really fit into any of the previous pages.

The monument to Peter the Great.  Note the wedding couple in the foreground of the final picture - this is regarded as a great place to get photo's taken on your big day.

Views from the water - we caught the hydrofoil back from Peterhof to the city center.

Some other miscellaneous city pictures.

They get everywhere ... :-(

The Metro

We had also arranged a trip on the Metro as part of our itinerary.  The Metro in St Petersburg is not like any underground, subway, tube or RTS in any other city that we have travelled on.  Each station is formally decorated in a different style.  However, travelling on the Metro is not recommended for solo travellers who cannot speak or read Russian – all the signs are in Cyrillic.  In addition, one of our party got accosted by a group of gypsies on the train and was blatantly robbed of his sunglasses.  This was ignored by the rest of the carriage, who seemed to regard it is normal.  It’s all part of life in modern day Russia.

There are no cameras allowed on the metro, apparantly because it is regarded by the Russian authorities as a military installation.  However, this site here has some pictures.
