We arrived in New York after a final 2 days at sea in glorious sunshine. We were staying with friends for the night who kindly took our
luggage off the ship and gave us a lift to the nearest subway station, so after
an unexpected encounter with possibly the friendliest American immigration
officer ever, we set off to spend a day or so in the city that never sleeps.
First call was a trip up the Rockefeller Center, to see the view. Whilst not as high as the Empire State Building, it does have the two advantages that, firstly, you can see the Empire State Building, and, secondly, the queues are much shorter! After this we headed out to Shea Stadium for the baseball - Mets vs Braves. A slightly disappointing game in a slightly run down stadium which is about to be replaced, but a good afternoons entertainment none the less. We spent the remainder of the evening eating with friends, and then visiting Little Italy for the Feast of San Gennaro - notably amongst other things for large amounts of food stalls including deep fried Oreo cookies! The following day we slept in, and then spent the first part of the afternoon in Central Park, before heading out to the airport and home. |
