Probably the most isolated place that we have ever visited, Nanortalik is the southernmost town in Greenland. The name means "Place of the Polar Bears", and the town, whilst the 10th biggest in Greenland, has a population of only around 1,550 people. The town itself is physically small, with many stone and timber buildings, and at least one sod house. There is a small open air museum at one end of the town, where a number of the older buildings have been converted to show aspects of past and present life here. At the other end of town, the modern sports centre was being used to display aspects of traditional Greenlandic culture - dances by some of the local children, music from a choir, and so on. Local food and beer were also available! We were 4 hours late in arriving, due to bad weather, so we only had 5 hours to tender off the ship and explore. We could have spent longer, but it was still a fascinating (if freezing) place to visit. |
