In Rome, we caught the local train (instructions
here) from the port of Civitavecchia.
As it was a wet January day, we started off inside in the Vatican museums - no
queues at this time of the year! Included in the
museum are the Raphael Rooms, and of course the Sistine Chapel, which was under
restoration the last time we were in Rome. The museum itself is as much
of an exhibit as it's contents, with frescoed walls and richly decorated ceilings.
After this, the original plan had been to leave the Vatican and walk towards Piazza Navona, the Trevi fountain and the Spanish steps. However, due to the heavy rain and Dave's dodgy knee, this plan was abandoned and instead we spent the rest of our time inside (and underneath) the enormous St Peters Basilica, before catching the train back to the port. |
