Yu Yuan Gardens were begun in 1559, damaged by civil war and then restored after WW2. This surprisingly large estate, in the centre of downtown Shanghai, comprises more than 30 buildings, the meandering external wall (the "Five Dragon Wall"), and various ornamental pools and rockeries. It was well worth a visit. Around the gardens are a large collection of scenic souvenir shops, all with very polite and persistent owners, selling the usual Chinese (and international) wares. |
