We arrived in Copenhagen at 8 in the evening, so the opportunity was there
to visit Tivoli Gardens at night.
A visit to Tivoli is supposed to have given Walt Disney the original inspiration for the various Disney theme parks. Whilst Tivoli is a pleasant evening out, and the live show on the Pantomime stage was superb, it is frankly little more than a small inner city park with a few rides and restaurants attached – for UK readers, think of an upmarket Blackpool with more attractive landscaping and without the smell of fish and chips. It was also extremely over-crowded, due in part to a free rock concert that was taking place in the grounds that evening. Having said all that, it had a certain charm and we enjoyed a good evening there, although the price of beer was enough to sober you up as fast as you could drink it.
The following day, we did some of the usual Copenhagen tourist sights – Rosenborg Palace for the interiors and somewhat unusual collection of art objects. The Danish crown jewels are also held there.
We also took a cruise on the canals, which gives a good overview of the city's visual attractions..
Finally, we saw the famous Little Mermaid statue, which is more than a little overrated - it is surrounded by hoards of people all saying "It isn't as big as I expected." By the way, the current exchange rates and general cost of living mean that Denmark can be viciously expensive for visitors. |
