We had arranged a ships tour in Lanzarote, as we only had limited time in dock there.  The tour was entitled "Fire Mountain and Camel Ride", and covered much of the volcanic scenery of the island, including some from camel back!

Lanzarote is still classified as volcanlogically active, and the earth in some areas is still very hot just a few inches below the surface.  At  Timanfaya National Park this is demonstrated by trying to hold hot earth, watching straw catch fire on it's own in a pit, and by an artificial geyser.  We also went to the coast where the last lava flows hit the sea in the 18th century, and finished up in a vineyard drinking samples of locally made wine.  The wonder with the wine was not so much the quality (drinkable, but not outstanding), but the fact that they managed to grow grapes in such a hostile environment at all!

We arrived back on board 10 minutes before sail-away - all in all, a good day out!
