City and Souks

We spent the first day in the city of Marrakech itself.  We actually visited very few of the formal tourist sites, and instead spent most of our time just wandering around, mainly in the old town (the Medina) and trying not to get lost in the enormous souk.  Mind you, some brands still get everywhere ...

Our accommodation was a riad (Riad dar Mimouna) in the heart of the medina, about a 10 minute walk from the main square.  It was down a maze of small alleyways, and would be impossible to find for the first time without a guide!  It was friendly, clean and comfortable, but in style it's a long way removed from your typical western hotel!  It's an excellent place to stay to get a flavour of the medina.
