Dikili is a small costal town in Turkey. Whilst not unpleasant in itself, there is nothing wildly unusual there, so we decided to take our one and only ships excursion of the holiday, to Pergamon and Asclepion. Pergamon is an ancient Greek city, now in modern day Turkey, and is also mentioned in the Bible as the recipient of one of St Johns letters in the book of Revelation (see Patmos). Nowadays, it is a hot and dusty, fairly well preserved ruined city, reached by a cable car, with a theatre in a spectacular location! After a quick photo stop at the Red Basilica, we then visited Asclepion just a few miles down the road, an ancient healing temple and health spa. |
