After 3 days at sea, we finally made landfall and were rewarded with our first glimpse of the Canary Islands. We had made no real plans for Tenerife or Gran Canaria, deciding just to wander around and see what we could find. As there wasn't much to see in the port area beyond shops selling cheap cigarettes, we caught the local tram up to La Laguna, the old capital of the island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was when we got there that we discovered that, as it was a Monday, practically all of the museums and churches were closed. We did manage to go up the tower of the Church of Our Lady of the Conception, where we got deafened by an unexpected peal of bells. We also had a nose around the courtyard of Casa Montaριs, before catching the tram back to port. |
