Las Vegas
Home Up Arizona Hawaii Las Vegas

After Honolulu, we decided to stop in Las Vegas for a few days on the way home, mainly to chill, recharge our batteries and start to break the back of 11 hours of jetlag.  Rather than a daily diary, here are some of our highlights and impressions (in no particular order).

  • I thought it was meant to be warm in Las Vegas!  The wind from the North is bitter.
  • We stayed in Harrah's for the first time, as our usual haunt (Treasure Island) was full.  Harrah's rooms are acceptable, but nothing special - closer to Travelodge than Vegas luxury!

  • The Strip monorail has now been built.  While it gets you quickly from one end of the strip to the other, it's almost as expensive as the London Tube and usually involves a long walk to get to the station in the first place.
  • The Treasure Island buffet met expectations - good sushi, barbequed meat, pasta, pizza, and lots of chocolate-dipped strawberries (a particular week spot of Dave).  The Main Street Station buffet was almost as good (and only half the price), with a wide selection of Mexican food.  However, the buffet at Paris, sampled on the last evening, was by far the best of the three that we experienced.

  • The afternoon "Dirk Arthur Extreme Magic Show" at the Tropicana is well worth the admission, even without making use of a 2-4-1 coupon.  Some very impressive stunts and a big smug cheesy grin!  The extreme magic show by Nathan Burton at the Aladdin is on a slightly smaller scale, but is equally impressive, and has more laughs.
  • The week we were there was the first week of the NFR rodeo finals.  As a result, there were many cowboy hats and boots in evidence, some on people who would probably break a horses back if they ever sat on one.  There was also a bride dressed all in white (jeans, jacket, the works) with a veil attached to her hat!
