There is no real reason to stay in Livorno on a first trip when both Pisa and Florence are nearby.  Whilst it is possible to do either town on your own (especially Pisa), the journey is long and fiddly enough to make it worth while taking some sort of organised tour.  We took a combined trip that spent some time in Florence, and then called in briefly to Pisa on the return journey.

Florence is the sort of town that you could easily spend a long weekend in, with it's collection of architecture, museums and statues.  On a first visit, it is quite possible to amuse yourself by wandering around, visiting the Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and so on.  If you want to make a museum visit (for example, the Uffizi or the Accademia gallery), you will save a lot of time by pre-booking.  Pisa on the other hand is mainly famous only for it's cathedral and leaning tower.
